This small-batch publication features artwork, poetry, and prose from thirty contributors* with heartfelt connections to prairies across the state of Iowa. In these pages, you’ll find no prairie monolith, no simple answers. Rather, you’ll encounter a living landscape intricately rendered in a multitude of hues and textures. You’ll journey with these writers and artists as they carefully attend to the nuances found in exterior and interior landscapes. You’ll hear stories of encounter, grief, beauty, and resilience. The prairies these writers and artists know and love are awash in memory, full of surprise and possibility. Through their offerings, you will encounter miles of big bluestem, soaring kestrels, darting skippers, grazing bison, blooming asters, and if you’re lucky, maybe even a rattlesnake slinking by. Our cover art is by Claire Jussel. A portion of proceeds from Field Guide sales will go to prairie preservation and restoration efforts in Iowa.
